Muscle knots are no fun for anyone. It can mess up your day but causing pain, headaches, and a whole bunch of other problems. The sedentary lifestyle that many of us seem to lead opens us up for more muscle knots. You may be wondering if you’re doomed to live with these knots for the rest of your life. Thankfully there are things you can do to avoid muscle knots and lead a pain-free life. Here are 5 ways to avoid muscle knots.
Muscle knots are irritated portions of muscle and or fascial tissue. In other words, they are tense or contracted muscle fibers. There are two main types of muscle knots. The first is active knots which create pain all the time. The other is heading knots which call me create pain when you press on them. Muscle knots can occur from injury, mental and emotional stress, poor posture, and sedentary lifestyle.
Light stretching will get rid of tension in the muscles by elongating them. Over time this can get rid of knots, and stop them from forming in the first place. It’s easy to Google stretches for just about any muscle group. You should hold a stretch for about 30 seconds to get the best results. Always release a stretch slowly so that you avoid injury.
Staying hydrated helps keep your muscles loose. When you’re dehydrated your muscles start to contract because fluid levels are low. This can create knots in your body. Try to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day to avoid dehydration. Coffee, alcohol, and soft drinks soft drinks don’t count, because they dehydrate you.
The stress we put our bodies through between lack of sleep and work can create knots. Getting the proper amount of sleep and taking time to relax can keep knots at bay. Try to meditate for 10 minutes today or 15 minutes consciously relaxing.
One of the reasons we get knots is because we sit for so long. The sedentary lifestyle mixed with bad posture can create knots. Make a point to get out throughout the day and walk around. Ideally, spend about 10 minutes of every hour walking around while at work. This may not be possible, but you can also uncross your legs, stretch your neck, arms, and legs, and straighten your back at your desk.
