BACK PAIN CLINIC
Whiplash is a condition that occurs when a sudden impact causes your head to suddenly jerk forward or backward, straining your neck with the force of the blow. Whiplash is one of the most common injuries sustained in an auto accident, but can be a result of virtually any incident that involves a sudden, violent impact that strains your neck unnaturally. Though whiplash and neck strain can be very painful, it is possible to treat it effectively at home. Here are some remedies for easing the pain of your neck strain or whiplash safely and efficiently.
Ice– As soon as you are able to do so after the incident, apply ice to your neck for 20 minutes every 3-4 hours for 2-3 days. This will help to alleviate pain and reduce swelling. Be sure to wrap your ice pack in a towel to avoid skin injury.
Over-the-Counter Painkillers– Taking a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as Advil or Motrin can help reduce swelling and relieve pain. Be sure to follow the guidelines for dosage on the bottle. If you have any questions or concerns about taking NSAIDs, consult your doctor.
Neck Braces– You’ve seen these in movies, and they look pretty funny, but they actually can help. Wearing a foam neck collar to stabilize your neck can help ease the pain of neck strain and add support where it is needed. Be careful not to wear your neck brace for longer than you need to, as this can weaken the muscles in your neck.
Massage Therapy– Visiting a licensed massage therapist to work out some of the kinks in your neck caused by the whiplash can be a very effective and relaxing remedy. A soothing, relaxing massage may also benefit you by reducing the stress you may still be experiencing from your whiplash-inducing incident, so it’s a win-win situation!
