Corrective Exercises for Hips

Hip pain can make virtually every aspect of your life more difficult than it needs to be. Your hip joints are responsible for helping you walk, run, climb, dance and exercise. Pain in your hip joints not only severely decreases your mobility but can impact your lifestyle by greatly restricting your hobbies and interests. Try a few of these corrective exercises to help keep your hips in shape and increase your range of motion, so you can get out there and live your life!

Fundamental Bridge– Lying flat on the floor with knees bent and hands and feet firmly planted, raise your gluteal muscles about 10 inches off the floor, then hold.  Be careful not to hyperextend your lower back by raising your gluteal muscles too high.

Marching Bridge– Begin with the Fundamental Bridge, then raise and lower each leg, one at a time, without changing the position of your pelvis, so that it looks like you’re marching horizontally. Be sure to do it slowly, keeping the pelvis level the whole time.

Stability Ball Bridge– A variation of the Fundamental Bridge, this exercise utilizes a stability ball to work your core muscles and hip joints.

Squats– A perennial favorite among personal trainers, squats engage the hip joints and strengthen muscles to improve function. Bend knees while keeping most of your weight on your heels. Try to keep your upper body as neutral as you can.

Hip Hinge– Stand with your knees, hips and shoulders aligned, bending slightly at the knees. Keeping your upper body still, push hips back while your torso hinges forward. Be careful not to let the motion come from the spine, but from the hips themselves. You should feel a stretch in your hamstrings.

Corrective exercises are a great way to restore your hips’ function and increase range of motion from home.
